To find out more about the region’s history, visit the nearly 1,000-year-old Conisbrough Castle or discover the Gothic ruins of Roche Abbey, which date back to the 12th century. You can also enjoy a hike through the gardens and parklands of Wentworth Castle.

Football fans will want to visit Sandygate Stadium in Sheffield, officially recognised as the world’s oldest football ground and still home to Hallam FC.

With the Peak District National Park just west of Sheffield, no sunny day should be spent indoors, with many hiking and cycling trails to explore.

Families can also spend the day out at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, where you can see lions, otters, tigers, sea lions and more, with yearly memberships on offer for unlimited access!

Transport in South Yorkshire

The M1 and A1(M) both cut straight through South Yorkshire, offering routes from Sheffield and Doncaster to neighbouring cities such as Nottingham and Leicester to the south and Leeds to the north.

For those travelling by train, Sheffield train station provides regular services to the likes of Doncaster and Leeds, as well as destinations up and down the country, such as London and Edinburgh.

Sheffield also has its own tram system called Supertram, while each big town has a great bus network in and around it, making public transport one of the best ways to get around South Yorkshire.

Depending on your desired international destination, the two closest airports to the region are Leeds Braford Airport (flights to Europe and Morocco) and Manchester Airport (direct flights to Europe, the United States, Cape Verde and many more).

Shopping in South Yorkshire

With several major towns and cities in South Yorkshire, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to have any shopping experience you desire.

Meadowhall in Sheffield is a must-visit shopping destination, offering around 270 high-street fashion and independent stores, plus a range of dining and restaurant options for a full day of enjoyment.

To explore local and regional goods, head to the historic Barnsley Market, standing proud since the 13th century. The market is held daily from Monday to Saturday and offers a variety of stalls selling anything from fresh fruit and vegetables to books and crafts.

Another great shopping option is Lakeside Village in Doncaster. This hub features over 45 well-known retail stores offering year-round discounts, as well as a wide selection of cafés and restaurants to enjoy around it.

Restaurants in South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire offers a diverse food scene, ranging from local delicacies in Barnsley to more exotic options in Sheffield and Doncaster.

Sheffield is home to two of the largest food halls in Europe: Cutlery Works and Cambridge Street Collective. Cutlery Works, for example, offers a variety of food vendors serving dishes from around the world, including Vietnamese street food and quality Japanese cuisine from Saiko Sushi.

Sheffield is also famous for its beer scene, with over 58 breweries in the city alone.

For fresh seafood, visit Clam and Cork in the heart of Doncaster market, or for the classic lamb Barnsley chop, head to Beatson House - a fine dining British restaurant set in an 18th-century stone building.

And if you’re looking for vegetarian or vegan options, try South Street Kitchen in Sheffield or savour traditional Turkish dishes at the highly rated Lemon Tree restaurant in Barnsley.
