Transport in South Shields

South Shields is served by the Tyne and Wear Metro – a light rail system that connects South Shields to Newcastle and its international airport, the rest of South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland, amongst other areas.

It takes about 26 minutes to get from South Shields to Newcastle City Centre via the metro system, and about 45 minutes to get from South Shields to Sunderland.

A ferry service also connects South Shields to North Shields and both Stagecoach North East and Go North East offer services that operate out of South Shields.

You can also take advantage of a direct National Express coach service to London.

South Shields’s location and the ease of travelling between the town and Newcastle makes it great for commuters.
