Things to do in Shropshire

As a county known primarily for its natural attractions, it should come as little surprise that some of the best things to do in Shropshire involve the outdoors.

The Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve sits between Whitchurch in Shropshire and Wrexham in Wales and has one of the most diverse wildlife ecosystems in Britain. With hundreds of species of moss, butterflies and reptiles, among other species, it is a must-visit for anyone interested in all types of wildlife.

An important landmark for Shropshire, Ludlow Castle is known for hosting several festivals throughout the year, such as the Ludlow Food Festival in September or the Ludlow Spring Festival.

For anyone wanting to enjoy a round of golf, Church Stretton Golf Club is not only open all year round, but it’s also located right in the heart of the Shropshire Hills – allowing for incredible views while swinging your clubs.

Shopping in Shropshire

Due to its rural setting, Shropshire is home to a vast number of family-owned businesses, often prioritising handmade wares over luxury brands.

A great example of this are the numerous and popular market towns, such as Whitchurch, known for their rows of small independent businesses promoting handmade items & antiquities.

That isn’t to say there aren’t any shopping centres in Shropshire, with Telford Centre offering a variety of recognisable big-name brands, such as H&M, River Island and Pandora.

The Darwin Centre in Shrewsbury is another popular destination for shoppers, mixing numerous coffee shops and eateries with larger name stores like Marks & Spencer, New Look and Clarks. There’s even a rubber duck store aptly named Shrewsbury Duck Store, meaning there really is something for everyone.

Transport in Shropshire

he largest and busiest train station in Shropshire can be found in Shrewsbury, with direct services running to Manchester, Cardiff and Birmingham on a regular basis.

Other major towns in Shropshire also have railway stations, connecting them to Shrewsbury and other towns in the West Midlands.

For example, Telford Central Railway station is situated on the Birmingham to Shrewsbury line, offering locals direct routes around the county and beyond.

As for those preferring to travel by car, Shropshire is well connected to the rest of the West Midlands and the British motorway network via the M54, while Wales is accessible through several A-roads.

Shropshire also has a vast bus network, with a single bus journey cap applied on several routes across the county.

Food in Shropshire

Restaurant 1840 is one of many restaurants in Telford, where the chefs prepare meals with only the freshest of ingredients. The location is a former Methodist church and one of the oldest buildings in Telford, which has been beautifully restored and turned into a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

As authentic as an Italian restaurant gets, La Dolce Vita is among the finest restaurants in Shrewsbury, with an entire family involved. The mother and the son do the cooking while the father and the daughter serve the food up. There’s something rather lovely about the warming, personal feel of La Dolce Vita and it doesn’t hurt that their food is of the highest quality

On the lighter side, Sofia’s in Wellington is a highly rated coffee shop, offering cooked breakfasts, deluxe milkshakes, salads and several delicious bites for those looking for something quicker and on the go.
