Things to do

Visit Kirriemuir and explore the birthplace and childhood home of Peter Pan creator, J M Barrie. Here you'll learn how his early life inspired his legendary work. The main exhibition, complete with original theatrical costumes and manuscripts is a must-see. Make sure you don't miss the washhouse, where the young writer performed his first play at the age of seven.

The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum is home to Dundee's main collection spanning 400 million years and has been at the heart of art and culture in the City since 1867. Eight stunning open gallery spaces house must-see exhibitions.

Throughout the galleries soak up the stunning paintings and discover artefacts from industries past and present, plus enjoy a tour of some of the displays with Audio Guides.

Montrose Basin is the enclosed estuary of the South Esk River. The reserve includes a visitor centre along with four remote bird hides. Covering 750ha, Montrose Basin is home to over 70,000 birds including the intriguing pink-footed geese, common terns, knots, and kingfishers. This is a great day out for all the family in Angus. Highlights include telescopes and binoculars, for the very best of bird watching and the kids will love the interactive toys and games like the wildlife portal and various puzzles. Family-friendly activities and events are held regularly, making this a must-visit all year round. When it's time for a break, teas and coffees are available at the café, with panoramic views across the Basin, and a range of wildlife gifts are available from the gift shop.

Shopping

Dundee, as the region's largest city, is the place to go for some retail therapy with an eclectic mix of shops in the city centre and beyond. Both independent retailers and big-name chain stores both find a home in Dundee.

Overgate is Dundee’s biggest indoor shopping centre. With big names in UK fashion retail like River Island, Primark, H&M and Next, this is the place to come when you want to treat yourself.

Dundee’s gift shops include the fun and unique Quirky Coo. This delightful little shop specialises in unusual items from Harris tweed hip flasks to whisky barrel photo frames.

J.A. Braithwaite is Dundee’s oldest shop that has supplied the people of Dundee with tea and traditional Scottish fare since 1868. Today, the store stocks over 100 types of tea and 30 blends of coffee, as well as unique pots to brew them in.

Transport

With a network of major A roads and the busy M90 nearby, travelling by car in the region and beyond is simple and fuss-free (and offers some breath-taking views to boot!)

Dundee train station links this coastal part of Scotland to other major cities like Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

For those wishing to travel further afield, Dundee Airport sees flights to England and Europe.

Food

From the world-renowned, Aberdeen Angus beef to vodka made with the region's very own potatoes, this part of Scotland is a foodie's dream.

So much of Angus' food has a story to tell, but no more so than the Arbroath Smokie. Its origins are thought to hail back to Viking settlers, but the smokie industry, as it now is, was created in the 1800s when local fisherwomen salted and cooked haddock over wood, hanging the fish by their tails. Today, there are a few family smokehouses still producing smokies and they’re a popular delicacy, sold on their own or in fishcakes and fish pate. Walk along the Fit o’ the Toon area of Arbroath and you smell them: the dedicated fishmongers who are still practising the same traditional smoking and hanging methods.

Cornwall may have its infamous pasty, but Angus gives it a run for its money with the Forfar Bridie, a meat and onion pastry named after the historic Angus market town it was developed in. Loved by locals for decades and certainly a bestseller, the bridie has another claim to fame: its link to writer J M Barrie. A native of Angus, Barrie mentioned the bridie in one of his novels, Sentimental Tommy, The Story of His Boyhood. Imagine a wee James Barrie enjoying a bridie as you tuck into your own.

Angus’s native and humble potato is jazzed up now, thanks to the transformation of companies Ogilvy Spirits and Arbikie, producers of potato-based vodka. The family farms behind these potatoes are getting creative with the ‘tattie’ fields which Angus has long been known for. What are you left with? Award-winning booze that ranges from small batches to international exports.
