They say first impressions count and that goes for your home too!

Once upon a time, the hallway was merely a place to drop your coat and shoes before entering the house. But it's now seeing a huge design revival.

From gallery walls and statement mirrors to stylish tables and clever storage, there are lots of practical ways to upgrade your hallway décor.

When it comes to decorating ideas for stairs and hallways there really are no limitations. No matter what size your space, there are some simple hallway interior design tips for you to make it a real entrance.

CONSOLE TABLES

A console table is a narrow, high table and can be the perfect addition for your hallway. They take up little space but can really transform the space especially when dressed up with some flowers, candles or a few sculptures.

Whatever style you’re going for, the choice of console table is endless. From metal frames that offer a sharp minimalist look like this from Cox and Cox, to beautiful wood finishes and something more classic like this mahogany piece from Tikamoon. Or you might choose a Scandi style with this light wood console table from House of Oak. Why not opt for a console table with drawers too? Then you’ve got somewhere easy to store your keys and mail and keep the table clutter free.

GALLERY WALLS

A gallery wall makes a great feature and can really add personality to your space and your hallway design.

But deciding the layout of your images or photographs doesn't have to be complicated.

There’s lots of inspiration to be found online and some brands like Desenio will even mock-up your prints with their online tool so you can get an idea of what sizes will work best in your space.

The best thing about a gallery wall is that it can be totally individual to you. Pick a colour trend, an image theme or go wild and mix it up with lots of fonts, prints and pattern.

CLEVER LIGHTING

When it comes to choosing the best lighting for a hallway, there are plenty of options. Functionality is important but that doesn't mean you need to compromise on style.

Pendant lights can create dramatic hallway lighting so if you want to go big don't hold back. If subtlety is more your thing then a flush fixture will give off enough light whilst being discreet.

Having the right amount of light is key too. It is recommended that lights are placed every eight feet to illuminate the space fully. If you have a narrow hallway, to give the feeling of more space add a large mirror or a series of small ones along the wall which will bounce the light making your hallway bright and welcoming.

BOLD COLOUR

The quickest way to give your hallway a makeover is by painting it a different colour. Just because it's a small space doesn't mean it can't be bold or bright!

Experiment with one wall at first to see how it works in your space and then accessorise with wall hangings and even plants to complement the new colour. You can define the hallway with different shades and tones and even carry the colour upstairs for a more dramatic look.
