As your outdoor surroundings start to bloom and the weather warms up, pollen season begins.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you might start sneezing, getting a stuffy nose, or feeling other symptoms as the spring season arrives.

Follow our tips to help prepare your home for allergy season.

Clean and declutter

In order to minimise dust and allergens in your home, its best to start off with a declutter. After all, dust has fewer places to hide with less clutter around the home and it makes it easier to maintain a clean living space.

Be sure to clean your home with a vacuum that has a built-in high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Unlike regular vacuums, HEPA filters capture dust and dust mite allergens as you clean, preventing them from being released back into the air.

Don’t forget your fabric furniture! Wiping it down with a damp cloth on a regular basis helps get rid of lingering dust in areas you probably use every day.

Allergy-proof your living spaces

There are several steps you can follow to create an allergy-friendly sleeping and living environment in your home.

Make sure to opt for anti-allergy bedding, as it’s designed to either resist or prevent allergens from accumulating. Wash your bedding on a hot wash at least once a week to kill dust mites and remove allergens.

If possible, opt for hard flooring over carpet, but if that isn’t an option, have a low-pile instead of a high-pile carpet and vacuum regularly.

Consider choosing furniture made of faux leather, wood, metal or plastic over upholstered. And choose curtains for your home that are easily washable, made of plain cotton or synthetic fabric.

Keep outdoor allergens from invading your home

During allergy season, it’s best to try and keep the windows in your home closed as much as possible to prevent pollen coming inside.

Stick to drying your clothes inside, rather than on a clothesline outside, as the pollen can stick to the fibres. It’s also helpful to take your shoes off at the door.

Also remember to clean your pet’s paws and fur if they’ve been outside, as they can pick up pollen too.

With a few simple changes, you can keep allergens under control and enjoy the spring season in comfort. A cleaner, allergy-friendly home makes all the difference.
