In the 13th century, the original priory was raised to the status of an abbey and dedicated to four saints, including the local St Mirin who brought Christianity to this area in the sixth century. The abbey became wealthy due to extensive trade with commercial centres in Europe. It was a centre of learning, and it is believed William Wallace was educated at the abbey by the monks. For those seeking adventure, White Water Rafting Glasgow is held at Pinkston Watersports, Scotland’s only artificial whitewater course.

Whisky lovers will relish a tour of Glengoyne Distillery and The Clydeside Distillery, whilst Tennent's Wellpark Brewery presents a fascinating look into the history and success of Scotland's oldest brewery (and most popular lager).
